World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: a reminder to plan, protect and speak up
Each year on 15 June, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day reminds us of the importance of protecting the rights, dignity, and safety of older people. But it’s not just about one day—these are conversations we need to have all year round.
Elder abuse can take many forms - financial, emotional, physical or neglect - and sadly, it often happens within families. In fact:
29% of reported cases involve financial abuse
39% involve emotional or psychological abuse
older women are particularly vulnerable.
At Aged Care Personal Advice, we believe the best protection starts with planning ahead and having open conversations early—before a crisis happens.
Why planning matters
As we age, decisions about where we live, who helps us with daily life, and who makes decisions on our behalf become more important. It's essential to think about:
Who you trust to make financial or health decisions if you can’t
What’s most important to you, and making sure your family understands
How to avoid misunderstandings or family conflict in the future
How we can help
As licensed and accredited financial advisers who are specialists in aged care advice, when aged care needs arise we can:
Help you think about your wishes and set up safeguards
Work with your legal adviser to help you put in place Powers of Attorney and legal arrangements
Spot early signs of financial abuse or undue influence
Support family discussions that reduce guilt and confusion later.
Sometimes, just starting the conversation can make a big difference.
If you or someone you know is experiencing elder abuse—or you're not sure—call 1800 ELDERHelp (1800 353 374) for confidential advice and support.
